John Rock was born free in Salem, New Jersey, in 1825. He became a doctor, dentist, lawyer, and a famous speaker who fought for the rights of African Americans. He believed education was essential and worked hard to help others. Rock is remembered as one of the first African Americans to be allowed to speak before the U.S. Supreme Court. Even when life was hard, Rock never gave up.
