Jupiter Hammon was the first African American poet to have his poems printed in America. Born in 1711 in New York, he was enslaved his whole life. But he learned to read and write, which was rare. He wrote poems and spoke about God, learning, and freedom. His poems and talks helped inspire others. He died around 1806.
